The one I have is for non "R" V8s. This was used until a service bulletin was published May 9th, 1963. The reason given for the change was improved cold weather starting.
I will clean it up and bench test.

Checked the tag on the Delco and is for 6 cylinder.
-
Thanks, look like there was a change from the 3 piece quarter panel to 2 piece. Maybe that occurred after the change to solid color upholstery or "new" quarter window latch.

I just checked the parts stash and I have a spare Prestolite MDU 7026. This for non "R" Stude V8 with auto trans. I also have a spare 12V Delco. I need to check if it is for V8, stick or auto.
I do not know the condition of either, but if you are interested, I will clean them up and bench test.

Thanks for the picture. Is the panel 1 or 2 pieces?
-
I could be wrong, but i believe that Prestolite mdu 7005/7006 are for 6 cylinder. The older delcos should be readily available. The correct starter is the Prestolite MDY series with 4 poles. Early Avantis came with the MDU series, same as non "R" stude V8s.

For the starter, you can use any 12 volt, V8 Stude starter as long as it matches the transmission type. My 64 R1 came with a Delco starter and always started. I have since located the correct Prestolite unit for authenticity.
For the booster, I believe that disc brake Larks use the same one. Also, there was a trivia question on this forum that implies that the booster from late 60s Hemi charger is identical. However, this may be rarer than the Stude version.
In my notes, I have recorded that an ABS 7" dual diaphram booster will work, if not needing authenticity. Unfortunately, I didn't write down any part numbers or other identification.

I checked 4 bell housings and did not see any. So, either they are missing, possible, or I do kot know what I am looking for, likely. In any case, Studebaker International shows both parts on-line for reasonable prices. They do not list Avanti specifically, but the part number is the same for all models.

Can you post a picture of what you have?
-
Hopefully, someone with a late 64 model Avanti can post a picture of the rear quarter panel interior.
Some where around R5408, assembled in November/December.
-
We all agree that Studebaker stamped engine serial numbers. This one appears to be raised, implying that someone other than Studebaker numbered it.
-
Ok, I will go to the shop tomorrow morning and locate them.
-
I have contacted Jon Myer and Barry Hackney. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I may have a spare set if you need.

Here are pictures. Ernie sent the black panels. They are similar to the following set which I took out of 63 Avanti. There are some holes missing and some of the holes are the wrong size. I could add the missing holes, so that is not a big issue.
The last pictures are what is in the 64 Avanti R5408 that I am currently working on. It was finally assembled in December.

The 73 may work. Does the 73 have the inset in the armrest to open and close the door or does it have the strap?
-
If you enlarge the picture, it really does look like the serial number is raised. Could this be an attempt at re-numbering a replacement block?
-
Just curious, where is the number? It does not appear to be in the correct location.
-
I am aware. I believe I can make either work with minor mods. Early Avanti II may work as well.
This one is for a 63 before the change, so that would be preferable.

Hooked the starter to a 12V battery and is spins freely.
FWIW, both of my 63s use this starter. My guess is that they were assembled before the change. I do not have any issues with either starting, however, I live in Florida, so no cold weather.
