Is the Paint Code for the 2007 Avanti Giallo Yellow a Lamborghini color. If it is, what year applies to it. . . our car recently had some work done on it, but the color needs attention. Thank you for taking time for us.

I need to replace the fog light lens on our 2006 Avanti. Any suggestions as to where I can get this? I heard a while ago that it was from a Bonneville, but don't know if that's true and if so, which year it's from.

I bought a copy of this book...Avanti, The Complete Story!... and have mixed emotions on the factoids presented.

	Understand I own a '63' and an '02 model.

Fist off, the '63' '64' models it was sparse on photos of the Production Models. A lot of Prototype Pix;s but lacking on the actual Production cars. The written info was good but could have gone further.

Then the 2001-7 info was also a little lax. I was hoping for actual production numbers regarding the '02' model. They had one page (the last page) dedicated to those numbers but it was broken down into a 2001 category and then skipped to the 2004 model... No mention or understanding of what happened between these years. Seems 53 models were made between '01' and '04' but it's not broken down as to how many per year.

Didn't anyone take a tally of what was made and when? Seems this would be common practice and actually essential to Us as Collectors.

I'm interested in Your feedback on the yearly production numbers and overall take on the Writings of this book..

With the 2026 AOAI meet coming up in just a couple of months, I knew it was time to do one last engine compartment upgrade to our 2006 Avanti GT before we take it to Palm Springs. I’ve done a lot of appearance work under the hood yet there was one area around the top of the radiator that just didn’t look finished and that needed to be corrected. After opening and closing the hood a dozen times, I knew that I wanted a waterproof panel that was strong, that wouldn’t show in the front hood edge to front body nose gap when opened or closed. It also couldn’t go past the hood struts either. I wanted it to wrap around the individual parts mounted in the engine compartment, while not rubbing up against any part mounted to the engine.

After measuring for the basic size, I cut two 12” x 22” pieces of 1/4” Luan plywood to create templates since I knew there would be several hours trimming, test fitting until everything looked right. Wanting them to be uniform in shape when joined together and being able to remove it if needed was another consideration. The Avanti front nose cap in front of the radiator has a lot of curves up and down, left and right that affected how level the piece would sit so test fitting and trimming was mandatory. And of course, the finished piece had to look good.

While I was working on the final template layout, I order a sheet of 12” x 48”, 1/8” thick, epoxy based marine fiberglass off of eBay. The seller is a boat company who sells 1/8” – 1/2” thick panels cut to the buyers’ specs who I’ve used several times for flat panels. Here are a few photos of the process and the results.

While the painted valve covers were cool, I still was looking for more and found it in a intake manifold cover made by California Pony Cars. Once installed, I figured out that the hood wouldn't close since the hood latch arm was hitting the cover. So I cut a notch out of the back side and lowered the hood again only to find out that the entire cover sat too tall for the hood to close. My computations and stubborness led me to believe that I could make it work, so I began cutting out the center section, notching the front mounting bolt holes, etc, etc. (I won't bore you with the story line of the modification since it went on for a few days LOL)

Eventually, I got the cover lowered enough that I did acheive about 1/2" clearance between the front of the cover and the hood when all the way shut. Now the center of the cover was really cut down and didn't look good at all, and the notched section at the back side for the latch arm went completely through the back, eliminating all structural support. As I looked at it, it occured to me that I needed to make a top cover section to attach all the way around the top, which would make the cover solid and strong and cover up the cut out center section. I remembered that I had some 1/4" thick clear plexiglass, so I made a template and then made the top plate. Next I got some small brackets that I had laying around and used 5 of them to screw the top plate in place. ( I notched the plate for the hood latch arm before installing it)

I decided to paint the cover to match the engine valve covers in red and semi gloss black. During the process, I went to a local sign shop and had a couple of decals made for the cover in Silver and installed them. Then I added some pin stripe in silver where the red and black met. Now at this stage, the cover was looking pretty good except you could see the cut out center section underneath the plexiglass top plate. So I painted a 1" border around the top plate which covered that up, plus the mounting brackets. NOW THIS IS GETTING PRETTY COOL!

As I looked at the flat black intake manifold runners, it struck me that I could take some of the carbon fiber wrap that I had left over from the dash project and place 8 strips of it on the top surface of the intake manifold runners. And then I decided to add a couple of 1" tall strips along the bottom sides of the new intake cover. (It's important to know that the angles of the carbon fiber pattern are a perfect match over all of the strips and side panels). Now it was time to install the cover and MAN THIS LOOKS AWESOME to me and the wife!! Here are some photos of the journey plus if you ever want to have the decals made locally, I have the VECTOR file that I can send you!

One upgrade that can’t be beat is to change out the run/turn/brake light exterior bulbs to LEDs. (I don't do the headlights since most don't provide the beams the way that I want them). I’ve done this more than once on other vehicles and the result is always excellent. When it comes to the turn signals though, there is always a flashing problem created since the LED bulbs don’t have enough electrical load on them to make the flasher work properly. If you have a 2005 or older Avanti, then you can solve the problem by using a United Pacific 90652 LED Turn Signal Flasher but not on a 2006-2007 S197 Avanti since it does not have one. As Can Bus systems improved, manufacturers like Ford integrated the flasher within a module known as the Smart Junction Box (SJB). Other manufacturers call this a Generic Electronic Module (GEM). In the case of our Avanti’s, the SJB is mounted on the passenger’s kick panel and includes a PC board along with various Can Bus system fuses. The SJB operates other parts of the car like the convertible top, heated rear window, interior and exterior lighting, some instrument cluster components among others. Because of this, the recommended way to make the turn signal and emergency flashers work properly is to add 50-Watt, 6 Ohm resistors to each LED light bulb in the turn signal circuit.

These are very common today and I purchased mine off Amazon. For our 06-07 Avanti’s, we need 6 of these since there are 6 turn signal bulbs in the car. Once you read about them or receive them, you’ll discover that they generate heat, enough so that you don’t want to zip tie or tape them to any other plastic part in the car. In my case, I decide to make simple brackets out of 1/6” x 1” aluminum flat metal. For the front, rear and front side marker lights I purchased the Auxito bulb brand off Amazon since I like the bulb design and have used them before without any problems. With the bulbs and resistors in hand, the next thing to do was to make up the brackets for the resistors. The fronts were simple since you can use one of the bumper mounting bolts the extend inside the tire wheel well and simply add a nut to hold the bracket in place. I used blue Loctite on the nuts to be sure they wouldn’t come loose. The rear lights were a little more challenging since you want to stay off of the interior trim pieces / carpet and provide room for the resistors to get some “air”. Once the bulbs and resistors were installed, the bright and crisp lights were now a welcome addition.

As we start getting closer to the AOAI national meet at Palm Springs, I have 4 upgrades to do before then. The first was to figure out how to install a belly pan under the front end of the car. To start with, I ordered a factory Mustang plastic pan from CJ Pony Parts of California. When I initially laid it on the floor and looked up at the car, I could see why Avanti Motors had just taken it off when building the car and disposing it. The pan is fairly flat in design and the front lower panel of the Avanti curves upwards at both ends. However, once I put the car on stands and took a hard look at it, I figured out how to mount it. The back side of it has a couple of locator push in pins and 3 holes to place screws into the support. My 06 still had the screws in the support. The front side has some recesses, angled and straight, it form-fits around the A/C condenser base, radiator drain, etc. As it turns out, the front angled section, which at first seemed to be a real problem, became the mounting solution for the front since the angle Matches the Avanti lower piece fairly closely. Follow along with the photos and it should make sense:

Our 2006 Avanti like others, have had a problem with the rear corners moving/vibrating when hitting bumps. Adjusting the hood helps some, but doesn’t fix it. Some owners have added hood pins which go through the hood or installed a latch on each corner similar to the original Avanti had. As we were traveling to the AOAI meet this year as a passenger, I could see the corner bouncing around at times and it hit me; why don’t I figure out a way to have a magnetic latch to each side? The electro-magnet would turn on when the engine was running and off when parked.

Once back home, I started doing research on electro magnets and found a company called APW Company who makes all kinds of permanent and electro magnets, so I ordered two EM100-12-122 1 ½” wide electro-magnets and two matching plates. The magnet have a rating of about 70 pounds which means it takes 70 pounds of pressure to remove the plates from the magnet. Next was to decide where and how to mount them. I decided to mount the magnets next to the outer hood stops using a thick aluminum bracket that attaches to the hood stop threaded shaft. The brackets will need some twisting and bending to meet the plates on the hood correctly. (the hood is not parallel to the hood stops so the bracket has to be bent so there is full contact between the magnet and plate). To wire the magnets up, I placed the ground lead on the screw that holds the magnet to the bracket, which is grounded to the metal inner fender. For power, I went to the harness close to the ignition switch and tapped into the white wire with a yellow tracer. I placed a 5 amp fuse inline with the power wire. The electro-magnets draw about .4 amps each, so 2 of them would be under a 1 amp draw.

We then went to a car show, which was a 4 hour round trip and no matter what kind of bump in the road, the hood corners never moved at all. The problem was now fixed!

One of the other issues with the hood latching is flex in the hood latch firewall section and as you continue to tighten down the hood, you are actually pulling the hood down in the middle. With the 2 pieces of plastic trim under the wiper arms removed, you can grab that firewall piece of metal and move it back and forth with little effort. To correct this, I took a piece of aluminum metal and added a brace, which eliminated any flexing of the latch firewall. (picture 3) Lastly, I had already placed a hood stop close to the latch to hold the hood firmly in place when latched. (picture 4). The process I would use to do this again is to install the brace, install the hood stop, adjust the hood latch and stops and then install the magnets. For our car, the latch brace, corner stop adjustments and electro magnets have eliminated all hood movement issues.

We bought our 2006 Avanti GT Convertible in 2024 from the original owner and it is #11 of approximately 28 cars made in 2006-2007 on the S197 Mustang chassis. I immediately began updating the car to what I consider more modern standards and have posted most of the changes during this year. For our final and most intensive improvement, this post will show you what was done and at the end, I’ll highlight this car’s build. I hope you enjoy it!

The modifications to the cars body started with our attending the Mustang Week event in Galveston Texas last April. With hundreds of Mustangs there, I was able to see all of the things that could be done to our car and set out to do each one of them. We got a lot of attention with our “Avanti Mustang” there and next year we are going to blow them away. OK, I’m going to highlight our first 2 body mods and then move into our last, a custom-made lower rear valance.

As I continue my customization of our 2006 Avanti, I thought to myself one day that if Avanti Motors could take a 2006 Mustang GT and convert it into an Avanti, then could I do it with a RC Car? And I didn’t want to do the standard 1/18-1/24 scale car, I wanted a larger one. So I started my search and eventually found an original, new in the box, 2006 Mustang GT toy grade 1/10 scale car. The plastic body on these were much thicker than today’s Lexan, so I figured it would be an easier car to work with. At 27” long, it’s pretty impressive too. The seller of the car was a collector who had it for years and was selling off his toy collections, so I was just lucky in my search. The only 2 negatives that come with an old toy grade car is the cheap electronics and thin brittle chassis plastic in parts of the chassis areas. So, I upgraded the electronics and added some pieces of 3/16” black plexiglass that I had laying around, to beef up the chassis while making a battery box, etc. It took about 3 months of off and on evening work to pull this off. Check out the build…

In the continuation of customizing our 2006 Avanti, I knew that the front-end design would look good with a front spoiler. Since the car was only made for 2 years, I also knew there wasn’t going to be any already made to purchase, so it was time to make one. It was important to keep the design classic and reserved, yet functional. The lower fog lights provided an excellent location to place the edge of the spoiler so it looked factory. The spoiler would mount to the top of the lower valence piece with 5 bolts and the edges would mount to the Fog Light area so there wouldn’t be any chance of vibration. Here’s how I did it:

At Mustang Week Texas just a few weeks ago, we won an award for our 2006 Avanti being there. The event also gave me the opportunity to see a lot of different options for the back of our car. The Avanti trunk and rear fenders are completely unique when compared to the same year Mustang but the ideas you can get from seeing all the custom designs were incredible. I now knew that I wanted to add a rear spoiler to the car and this would be #1 of 2 changes that I’m going to make to the back of the car. I also knew of the complexity of making a 1 off piece, so I wanted to find a premade fiberglass spoiler that I could modify to work with the multi curved trunk. I bought and returned a couple spoilers that just wouldn’t work. After returning the last one, we had a chance to go to a large monthly car show in the Austin area. As I looked at the back of many different model sports cars, I noticed one that had a back end which was about as flat as our car. The other thing that I noticed was that some of those cars had flat top mount spoilers, edge mounted flip up spoilers and pedestal mount spoilers. Flat and edge mount were out due to the arch at the top edge of the Avanti trunk, but the pedestal mount was promising. I took my iPhone tape measure app and measured our car and the car that looked like it might work and holy cow, the width was within 1/2” of each other. After eyeballing the fender angles and spoiler design, I knew I had the car. 2016-2023 Dodge Challenger! The next day, I located an aftermarket factory design Fiberglass spoiler that was primed and ready to paint, so I ordered it. Once arrived, it was time to decide where to mount it and how much modification it needed in order for it to mount correctly to the Avanti trunk. I basically had to add 1/8” to 1/4" of fiberglass to the edges of the mount of the spoiler so it matched the curvature of the trunk and so that the edge of the side of the spoiler was gapped to the fender correctly. Here it is:

I read about a national event called Mustang Week in January and submitted our Mustang based 06 Avanti to see if they were interested. They were and we took our car there at the end of April. It was among 1500 Mustangs of all years, some from as far away as Canada and Puerto Rico. Our car won an award while there, but the most important thing were the ideas that we came up with while looking at all of cars/vendors. I now have 4 new ongoing projects with the car because of this and the first was wheels/tires. Ford originally intended that the car come with 18" wheels per the door sticker, but Avanti Motors put 2004 17" x 9" Mustang Cobra SVT wheels on the car instead. After we decided on a wheel, and we looked at dozens, we bought "Xcess 5 Flake" chrome rims, 18" x 8.5". I then purchased Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires and put 255/45 on the back and 245/40 on the front. The front tires are 1.25" inches shorter than the back and gives the car that "dropped" front end look. The speedometer is accurate when checked with a GPS and the car drives and handles extremely well. I put the original wheels/tires for sale on Facebook and sold them in 1 day. 3 more mods are coming soon.

Our 2006 Avanti came with 17” wheels that were actually for the 2004 Mustang Mach 1 models. They have a lot of miles on them and since I recently put new tires on them, I decided to dress them up a little instead of replacing them. The chrome is getting tired and really looked bad on the inside of the wheel, so I decided to black out the part that you see the most when looking through the rim. The newest trend in wheels is to wrap them for unique patterns/colors, and since I had some extra black carbon fiber wrap, I decided to use that. The other thing was to figure out how much of the inside actually needed blacking out, and I determined that 3” from the back side of the spokes would be sufficient. Also, the diameter of the wheel spoke edge is different than 3” towards the back side of the rim, so wrapping it in 1 piece would end up being more difficult due to the extra curvature. I did a test wrap of about 1/4 of the wheel, 3” deep and it did exactly what I thought it was going to, no good. As I looked at it, I realized that installing or removing wheel weights would also become a problem, so the solution would be to wrap the inside in pieces, with each “joint” being behind the “spokes”. That would solve both problems and if wheel weights were added or removed, I could patch that area much easier. I also used 3M adhesive promoter (primer) to increase the wrap glue strength. A small brush was used to apply it to the area that the wrap pieces were would be placed. So, here we go:

The 2001-2007 Firebird and Mustang based cars are so unique and appealing until you get inside the car and then you see either a GM or Ford car. In 2006-2007 Avanti did make a custom dash that was reminiscent of the late 80’s cars, but that was about it. I had recently sold our 1982 Avanti II which had a fantastic instrument cluster in the dash and as I look at the dash of our 2006 S197 Mustang based Convertible, it was easy to see that there could be some improvement of the gauge area. In addition, I wanted to replace the Ford Shaker 500 radio with a more powerful and modern flat screen radio, move the A/C-Heater controls “up” in the dash and clean up the sides of the console. The 2006 had 107,000 miles when purchased from the original owner and while he did a great job on maintenance, there was some normal wear and scuffing on the inside of the car which I am cleaning or covering up with carbon fiber wrap in addition to covering up all of the tired woodgrain.

First, I looked hard at radio options and selected the Kenwood DMX908S Touch Screen radio. It has all the bells and whistles that I want, plus it has more power than the Shaker 500 radio. Crutchfield Audio sells the Kenwood radio and a wiring kit that connects it to the Mustang stock wiring which allows the 4 car speakers and 2 door mounted subwoofers to work correctly. I had previously replaced the 4 car speakers with JL Audio speakers which was a good upgrade and let me tell you that this radio upgrade is a HUGE improvement over the radio.

Next, I had to decide what to do with the gauge appearance. In doing research for options on the Mustang itself, I found US SPEEDO, a company that make gauge cluster panels for all cars. After checking out all of the options, I selected the Stainless-Steel Panel. I also felt that the dash panel that covers the dash was missing 3 trim rings that could go around the gauges. Now I’ll tell you this was not an easy thing to find since there was almost nothing available. But I finally found a company called GAFFRIG which makes gauge trim rings for all sorts of companies. They did have the 4” ID gauge rings for the speedo/tach and the 3 3/8” ID rings for the center cluster. They were polished aluminum with some kind of clear coating added. The ring edges are pretty wide and once the speedo/tach rings were set in place, the center ring wouldn’t fit flush since it overlapped the other two so I decide to modify the edges in 2 places so it would fit correctly. Lastly, the plastic coating on the rings looked dull next to the chrome A/C vents in the dash so I decide to sand off the coating, repolish the rings and then put on a heavy coat of car wax to seal them off. They look like chrome now. Attached are photos of the project and I hope you like it!

I've always liked the look of the 2001-2003 Firebird based cars where they had painted the headlight openings black. I decided to do the same to my 2006 model by using vinyl wrap instead of paint. The openings aren't true circles on the front or back side, so I made a template using 3 sheets of paper to get a general idea of what the wrap pattern should look like, then added about 1" to all 4 sides. To me, the best way to do this was to remove the lights, so off come the front wheels, the front inner fender liners and then the lights themselves. Here are a few photos of the job starting with the stock look, we really like the new look!

	Ron... see last post.

Mind you, I'm a little frustrated.

John Hull has been Helpful to a degree and I thank Him. I have a 2002 and John told Me I owned 1 of 33 that year. I quickly photocopied that e-mail and put it in my Avanti File.

But what about further info ??

When You buy a Car and want specs showing rarity and limited production number on most any vehicle, the info is available... info like paint colors, (theres a thread right now on how many black 63-64 Avanti's were made) engine sizes and options, Hardtop vs Convertibles.(add t-tops in our case.). These and many other items play into finding out the rarity in numerical order of wether a car is rarer than the next of the same year. It plays into valuation.

If I buy a 67-69 Camaro . I want to know if it's an SS/RS a Z-28, Convert or other, Do numbers match thruought and so on. The same goes for these cars and they are FAR RARER than any Camaro or Mustang..

The frustration Is We Have Little To Go On! Y'all here have been VERY helpful but we're all left lacking.

As I continue to customize our 2006 Conv to our liking, the next change I wanted to make was with the Audio speakers. From the factory, the car came with the Shaker 500 system, which included a 6 changer CD/AM/FM radio, along with two 6x8” co-axial speakers and two 8” subwoofers at the bottom of the door panels plus two 6x8” co-axial Speakers in the rear side panels. The subwoofers each have their own amplifier to power them as well. Research revealed that the radio only puts out about 20 watts per channel to the speakers and the amps pump up the signal for the subwoofers. So, when one looks for speakers to work with the radio, you want to get speakers that are close in range to what the radio puts out. In other words, you don’t want to buy speakers with an RMS rating of 100 watts when the radio only puts out 20 watts. The other thing that you want to look for is the sensitivity rating. With a low powered signal coming from the radio, you want the speakers to have the highest sensitivity rating possible. A rating of 93 is about the highest you’ll find. Anything in the 80’s isn’t good for a stock radio. The last thing you want if you like base sound like I do, is to get a speaker with the lowest possible frequency response “low” Hz number. The average 5x7” or 6x8” co-axial speaker runs 60-25,000Hz. 60 is base, 25,000 is the highest pitch sound the speaker can process. The speaker that I chose, has a range of 40-24,000Hz which has the best base sound possible, a sensitivity rating of 93 which is great, it is the JL Audio C1-570x. I’ve used JL Audio speakers in other vehicles with good success. The only thing that I dislike about them is the trademark yellow color but for the sound, I’ll live with it. Lastly, there is a need for a grille for the speaker and I found the Morel 210MESH57 fit the bill nicely. (everything came from Crutchfield)

Now I want to take you through the installation of the door speakers and subwoofer enhancements. (I also replaced the rear panel speakers) For the subwoofers, you’ll need to get some speaker poly fill. Poly fill placed loosely in the subwoofer “box” smooths out the low base sounds a lot and is definitely worth doing. Now, the door panels need to come off and there are a lot of u-tube videos on how to do this on a 2006-7 Ford Mustang so I’ll skip that part. If you buy the speakers from Crutchfield, they will send easy to read instructions on how to replace the front and back speakers.

Picture 1 below shows the new speakers and the grille. The base of the grille goes between the speaker and the factory speaker mount, then the speaker is attached with screws through the grille base. To start with, you have to remove the factory speaker mounts off the door. Each mount has a marking that says left/right and Top to help you when reinstalling.

Picture 2 shows the factory speaker mount with a Dremel tool next to it and the 4 places that the “ears” need to be removed from the mount. I use the Dremel tool, you can use whatever works for you, you just have to remove the 4 ears and leave a level surface for the speaker grill base to mount.

Picture 3 shows the “ears” removed and the grille base.

Picture 4 shows the speaker mount reinstalled on the door. Note that the speaker lead wire is installed between the mount and the door body. You have to do it this way in order to connect it to the speaker and car wiring harness.

Picture 5 shows the speaker grille base and speaker mounted to the factory speaker mount.

Picture 6 shows the speaker grille installed.

Picture 7 shows the back of the door panel with the subwoofer panel removed and the poly fill laid into the sound channel. The panel, which is above it, is also recessed but you don’t want to fill it. The poly fill isn’t supposed to be packed in the area, just loosely set in, so doing half of the area is sufficient.

Picture 8 shows the other door panel and the red silicon adhesive that I used to seal off the subwoofer channel from the rest of the door panel.

Picture 9 shows the subwoofer panel reinstalled.

Picture 10 shows the ½” x ½” foam gasket that I used to fill in the area between the speaker grille and the door panel. What I didn’t show was that the door panel had an extra plastic edge there that I removed where the gasket is now. I was afraid it would hit the speaker grille so I pulled the leather back and trimmed it off and reglued the leather back around it.

Picture 11 shows the door panel on and the foam gasket.

Picture 12 shows the completed job and the sound is absolutely great. The subwoofer sound is much louder, smoother and the speaker sound is much better than stock. Our 06 model has a black interior with red seat inserts and red door panel inserts. The color has some pink in it and doesn't look good to me nor matches the red car body at all. So, I contacted Seat Doctor, who makes leather seat dyes and who I have used before, to make some dye that would match the red body of the car. Next I removed the seats, cleaned them thoroughly then masked and papered them off (the most time consuming part of doing the job). Harbor freight sells a $29 touch up paint gun with regulator that works great with this water based dye. I sprayed 2 coats of dye, 20 minutes apart at 40psi. As you can see, then job turned out really nice.

The 2001-2007 Avanti's are really unique looking and beautiful to some. So when you open the hood, what does it look like then?

My 2006 engine looked pretty plain, so I decide to upgrade the appearance by painting the valve covers. There are some aftermarket valve covers available, but for the money, you end up with "Ford" or "Ford Racing" made into the cover. So, I spent less that $100 to paint the covers to match the car color, including a new gasket set. Here are before and after photos:

Continuing my attempt to improve the hood height compared to fenders, I noticed that the hinges are sitting on top of the fiberglass nose cap. In looking at this area from underneath the car, the hinge bolts go through the 1/4" thick fiberglass nose cap and then through a radiator core support metal brace. Ok, so the hood is sitting about 1/4" above the fenders and the hood hinge is mounted on top of a 1/4" thick nose cap. 😏

Time to make a change. I took a scribe and traced out the hood hinge where it sat on the fiberglass nose cap. Next I laid out some blankets on the windshield and fenders and removed the hood by removing the 4 nuts off the lower hood hinge bolts. I left the hinge attached to the hood so as to not change any adjustment pertaining to that part. My wife and I picked up the hood and slide it back about a foot. With the hood hinge area now exposed, I got out my Dremel and Die Grinder and cut out the fiberglass area that I had traced out. Once done, we set the hood back in place, bolted it down and took a look at how it fit and operated.

The hood now sits almost flush along the fenders and headlight area. But when opening and closing the hood, you can see the hinge flex some where it attaches to the sheet metal core support brace. Well of course it does, this Ford Mustang radiator core support brace was never intended to support a hood hinge! So, I cut two 12" long, 1 1/2" wide, 3/16" steel pieces of steel that I had laying around, drilled 1 hole in the center of the metal and placed them under the braces so that when you installed the front hinge nut, it would stiffen the support brace.

Test # 2, problem resolved. Now the hood sits much closer to where it should, it opens and closes well and there isn't any movement in the hinge mount.

I'm happy and finished up the job with some seam sealer around the area I cut out. Picture #1 is before, 2-4 after.

When I bought our 06 model, I noticed the hood was sticking up about 1/4" all the way around, except at the windshield area. When driving, the entire back side of the hood would bounce around all over the place too when hitting bumps. In looking at the hood hinge, it was obvious that there was no adjustment to lower the front and sides of the hood to where they would match the fender lines and front end panel. On the latch mechanism, you can adjust it up and down, but when doing that, you are actually bowing the hood down in that area. The bump stops at each end of the hood are adjustable, but that doesn't help the area close to the latch.

In looking at the hood, it's obvious that it is bowed downward in the center, from the front to the back. This means that you will never get all the gaps around the edges to where they are all flush, yet you can get the sides really close to flush with the fenders and the back side by the latch.

To tackle this, the first thing that I did was to add a bump stop right next to the latch area. I had an adjustable one from a vehicle that I had, so I modified it as necessary and installed it as shown. I temporarily loosened the latch and set the hood up correctly using the 3 bump stops that were now along the back side of the hood. Lastly, I set the latch to where it would lock the hood in place where there was even pressure on all 3 bump stops. The center bump stop will prevent any more "bowing" of the back side of the hood and help stabilize it.
