Cars & Coffee meets in Charlottesville, Va are excellent (1st & 3rd Sat, 8am - 10am). There are always dozens of interesting cars, with few modern cars, and a wide range of cars from Alpha Romeos to Wartburgs (just kidding, no Wartburgs). There always seems to be an exotic or two: Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren. Plus Twin-Cam MGA, SAAB Sonnet III, etc. --Dwight

Weren't some 305 HO (high output) engines installed in Avanti IIs? Those made decent power. I once had an '84 Pontiac Trans Am with this engine (BW T-5 5-speed trans) and it was reasonably powerful for the time.

Also, it’s the original R1 engine.

Greetings! I'm the new owner of a 1963 Avanti (though I'm a long-time owner of Hawks and Larks). I'm going through the Avanti, changing fluids and generally just familiarizing myself with it. I'm perplexed by a silver, cylindrical device that's mounted in the engine bay down under the alternator. It has wires running to it, and a fluid line (which may be oil or transmission; I have not yet been able to trace it). There's also an (evidently aftermarket) toggle switch on the dash that seems to energize the mysterious cylinder. It just kind of buzzes when the toggle is thrown. I've attached a photo of the device; photo is taken from under the car. Note the red logo. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I assume it's NOT original to the car. I can't see any reference to it in the workshop manual. Thanks for any information you can provide! Steve

Hate to be negative, but I believe there are major differences between an Avanti and Lark manual window regulator.

Yes!… that’s how it looks to me!

I think you have to keep the Avanti window regulators and convert the power window section to manual. I'm sure it could be done. Trial and error, if I was doing it I would start by comparing it to a Lark set up. It may only be the quadrant and arm you need to changeover/modify. Pb

My 63 has power windows at least partially. the motors are there but no wires or switches. Will the manual regulators from another Studebaker work with the Avanti?

This question is probably a matter of personal opinion… but I’d say #2 is not the ‘Avanti view’!

Agree, a 305 is a boat anchor as far as the power goes.

Went and hunted that car photo and I think #2, side view has some Avanti in it.

I think #2 Dazzler would be the paints in vibrant colors

A subtle hint of ‘future’ Studebaker Avanti styling can be seen in Raymond Loewy’s 1960 Lancia Loraymo custom automobile….. The Loraymo looks most similar to the Avanti from the …..?…… view. 1) Front…..2) Side……3) Rear…..or…..4) Overhead

When I was a kid I bought a really nice ‘58 Silver Hawk with a 185 CI flathead six… No power steering, however I remember how nice and light it steered with that sweet little six under the hood. So, of course, I ‘improved’ that Hawk by pulling out the six… and replacing it with an improperly installed ‘58 392 CI Chrysler Hemi, which I yanked out of an Imperial my uncle was junking!!

This one is currently on display at The Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, MI.

My travel rearward and upward is as far as it will go. As shown in these pictures, the upper adjustment screw cannot go back any further. And the other picture shows a hole with a missing bolt. But I don’t know what should go there. At the bottom, there is a bolt. But shouldn’t be a screw like the adjuster at the top? Obviously, someone had this car apart before I bought it.
