All factory R3s (Avanti) are shimmed higher to clear the pressure box. That makes it necessary to slot the holes where the bumper brackets go through the body in the lower grille area.

Over the years, many owners of R2 Stude Avantis have added reproduction R3 air boxes to their engines....and I don't think all these cars were 'shimmed' up at the front....I wonder what their secret is?

I am building a 63 and have installed an R3 engine  All I had to do to make it fit with the air box and standard body shims is use smaller/shorter front motor mounts, but I also had to shave almost 1/4 inch off of the sealing edge of the top side of the air box.

1/4 inch off the sealing edge of upper aluminum box......VERY CRAFTY!!:D

I like R3forward's idea of using the 'thin' front engine mounts and 'shaving' the R3 air box, hence keeping the Studebaker Avantis original 'nose down' rake.:)

To me, as cool as the production line R3 Avantis are, they're loss of the 'Avanti Rake' has a negative impact on the 'look' of those cars.:( (IMHO)
