1984 Avanti - Can't get the Key out of the Ignition

Interesting problem - When I bought this Blake Avanti, I had trouble getting the key out of the Ignition. You had to play with the floor gear selector to get it to release the key.

Now, I seldom get the key to release. If I can, it is after entering a pitched driveway.

I tried adjusting the shift linkage with no improvement. I hate to tear into the steering column with no experience.

Could this also be a broken rear motor mount?

Anyone have any experiences with the GM Steering Columns?

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Update: An 84' GM Steering Column had a Park Lock Cable to the Gear Shifter.

It might look like this:

Are you having a problem getting the key out of the ignition or having a problem with the lock assembly going into position to let you remove the key?

The Neutral Safety should not stop the lock from releasing the key.

I would loosen the ignition switch at the base of the column and see if the ignition lock will go freely into position.

Good luck,

Having trouble with the lock assembly going into position to remove the key.

Do these cars have a Park Lock Cable like in the diagram?

It appears I should open the shifter console first ???

If it uses the GM column you can disconnect the cable midway down the column.

But the problem is more likely in the ignition switch. The switch is flat and at the base of the column. There is a rod that goes into the switch from the lock cylinder, if the switch is sticking it will not allow the lock cylinder to rotate fully.

Good luck,

Jim:

Thanks for your help. When I isolate the problem, I will report back.

If anyone else has any ideas, I am all ears.
