  1. The dash/interior of my car was very original when I bought it...I've since had to replace the dash pad and front seat covers...and it has the original owner's plaue on it, since verified by a card from the Studebaker Museum.

No sign of a "120 m.p.h." plaque...leading ne to believe mine never had one.

  2. Those are good looking wheels but are not the "kidney bean" type that was offered back in 63-64.

The ones Factory Five is offering look more like the ones you'd find on a Cobra...which is what Factory Five makes.

Anyone have a lead on more correct Halibrand reproductions?

  3. I was recently at a job fair. one of the companies was a firm that does 3-D printing. They had a little unit on their table...a crank that moved cams and a wheel. Pretty intricate parts, probably a dozen in total.

The HR rep told me they made it.

"After you made the parts, then they were assembled?" I asked.

"No" she said, "It some from the printer exactly like that".

    That impressed me.

  4. I bought mine from Phantom a few years ago. I got samples from several outfits and chose the one closest to what I saw in the Avanti salemans book. So far no one's complained. :)

My point is, if someone doesn't like what's out the from the usual Avanti vendors, try Corvette vendors.

  5. I've noticed that mid-year Corvettes have salt & pepper carpeting.

Corvette suppliers might be a source for correct carpeting.

Although I'm sure the Studebaker suppliers might already be using the stuff, I'll guess that no one makes Studebaker specific carpeting, and there were a lot more Corvettes than Avantis.

Who knows, maybe Studebaker used the same source back in the day?

    Just a suggestion....

  6. Hopefully, any serious old car buyer (at least those who can read) will head the caution..."Buy the best one you can afford".

Rebuilding/restoring any car isn't cheap, and a long out of production orphan especially so.

There are enough nice #2 or 3 quality cars out there for very reasonable money that no one should even think about bringing an Avanti back from the dead...unless itis a special car or has sentimental value to the owner.

  7. I just received the new 2014 Winter/Spring price guide from Sports Car Market magazine (the guys that report on all the auctions).

For a #2 car they say:

Low $18,000 High $28,000 and they give it 4 stars which means they expect it to outpace the general (i.e. not vintage Ferraris or older Porsche 911s which are very "hot" now) market and gain 10% or more in the coming year.

For comparison here's what they said in

    2013 Summer/Fall

    Low 15,000 High 26,000

    2013 Winter/Spring; 2012 Summer/Fall; 2012 Winter/Spring; 2011

    Low 14,500 High $25,000

Yes, we all know price guides aren't always worth the paper they're printed on....but allow me to look at this like a glass that's half full: It's nice to see some upward movement. For years Avantis have been undervalues, the same car with a Ford or GM badge would bring triple what Avantis now bring.

  8. I was looking through the new roster and was wondering...

-How many members does the club have?

-How many individual cars are represented...How many 63s, 64s, etc.?

I'm guessing someone in the HQ should know without anyone having to count all the entries.

  9. It's a nice touch to keep former owners appraised of their former cars current status. I've tried to do that with mixed results.

I know in 20 years when I'm in a retirement home, I'd appreciate the gesture. As has been said many times before, we're just temporary caretakers of these cars.

    Happy Holidays to all.

  10. Trying to get Avanti owners together is like herding cats. Locally, we try to have one lunch get-together a year, but it doesn't always happen. There is zero interest in a club with monthly meetings.

I miss our annual get togethers at the Denny's on Sprague. As far as monthly meetings, there is no local chapter of AOAI here. There is a Seattle section, and I'll try to put together a event for Eastern Washington - Northern Idaho members. Even with our meetings, there are still several Avantis in town that few ever see.

  11. Studebaker International has the under hood decals...one by the battery SI part # 6-004), and IIRC one on the supercharger.

Also, they have new chrome oil filler caps with the correct STP decal affixed. They would probably be cheaper than getting your re-chromed.

Don't know about whether to re-chrome the valve covers and air cleaner. It might depend on the cost for having your redone. IIRC, a new air cleaner is $200+.

The electrical shielding is stainless and not chromed.

Don't forget the underhood insulation...they offer two different sizes, IIRC depending on your serial.

The basic bay is body color. The wiring on mine (I believe its original) is black.

The radiator shroud is semi-gloss black...and does not have a "Caution fan" decal. S-I sells those, but they're correct for Avanti IIs.

Do you have the correct red & white windshield washer bag? I found a NOS one through a Packard parts house in Montana at a great price. The bracket from which it hangs is also semi gloss black.

I repainted the top of my PS reservoir. I used aircraft paint stripper to take off the old stuff without blasting/sanding or adding more paint thatwould make the embossed lettering on it disappear. That added a lot to the appearance of the engine bay.

Hopefully, someone with a great original car will post photos. There are some great original cars out there.

As far as wheel covers, S-I has them for sale at $60-75 apiece. If your are in good shape dent wise, they (and others, I found a set on ebay) sell black decals for the black sections and you can repaint the silver inset parts with silver spray paint.

The wheel color is off white. They say Ford Wimbeldon white is close (available in spray cans from various out fits) or Studebaker white is sold by S-I and other Studebaker vendors.

    Good luck with your project.
