  1. The hill-holder in my 3-speed '63 R1 is inop. The 2-3 synchronizer seems to have seen better days -- I can only up-shift without significant gear-clatter by double-clutching at low speed/low RPM. A trans rebuild is planned. What should be done with the hill-holder? Might it have contributed to my shifting issues? I have no interest in a functional hill-holder -- it's really flat-land here. Besides, I'm still pretty good at operating the clutch.

...while my 89k-mile original, unrestored is pretty much an unmolested car, a fully-synchronized 4-speed is a curiosity. Thoughts?

  2. Guess what - my engine runs hot. I can depend on a puddle every time I park the car - especially after a nice run. I'm thinking of re-coring radiator to 4 row. Comments?

...an 'aside': how do I update my profile picture? My now-sold '77 is in my profile - I can't figure how to delete it and "add" my '63.

    Tnx, Bill

  3. Thanks to all for a wealth of info.

Seems Ermine White (PPG 8288) is correct for '63 Studebaker/Avanti wheels.

Begs the question, "Why not 'simply' use the correct Studebaker color code (PPG 8288) if buying custom-mixed paint?" If buying off-the-shelf, I understand why one might prefer "Ford Wimbledon White" (PPG 8378), assuming it can be found.

    What am I missing?

  4. Thanks -- my painter needs(wants?) more. Paint code by paint manufacturer would work best. Call me cheap, as an alternative I could by an aerosol can, paint a panel and then have a local paint supplier match -- I'd rather not. "Someone out there" must(should?) know code by supplier. Yes? A call to a Studebaker parts vendor was of little help -- apparently directions on the quart can are limited. Enamel? Lacquer? Base coat/clear coat? Reducer?

  5. I believe the Ford Crown Vic wheel used is p/n E2AZ-1007-A. Best I can tell, this is a 15 inch diameter wheel with a 6 inch width. The center line diameter for the stud/bolt pattern is 4.5 inches. Here's where it seems to get tricky - some call this a 4.25 inch diameter hole pattern as measured from one hole then skip a hole and measure to the center of the next hole. I do not know model years or specific applications expect what others have mentioned - 1983-1997 Ford Crown Victoria.

  6. I'm looking to update tires/wheels on my '63 R1 (R4314). The Avanti Magazine (Issue 152) that was recently sent confirms use of '83-'97 Ford Crown Vic wheels. What experience do others have with the Ford wheels? I plan to use P205/75R15 tires with these wheels and the '63 Avanti wheelcovers. Car is equipped with original brakes. No immediate plan to change - tho rear discs have my interest. Will the Ford wheel fit into the spare tire well?

  7. I'm the new owner of R4314. By all indications, this car was built without a grille (no holes drilled). Tho I haven't yet seen the car, it has an egg-crate grille that is "attached somehow" and very noisy when "bumped". The question - install an Avanti grille? Or, no?

  8. So, I've been thinking (?) about my "needing chrome" bumpers and doors with handles and separate locks.

Who has painted their 'chrome bumpers' body color? If done, now what do you think?

Too late did I realize the '77 (mine) had both exterior door handles and door locks. I prefer the 'look' of an integrated exterior door handle & lock. An Idea (?) popped into my head today - "shave" the handles & locks and replace with key-fob operated lock/latch. Who and done this and what are pitfalls? Would you do it again?

  9. I have several questions regarding hog trough replacement; they are,

    1) excluding the benefit of stainless "lasting a lifetime", what are the pros & cons of one-piece vs three-piece troughs?

    2) are three-piece troughs welded, screwed, or riveted together once in-place?

    3) how "exposed" are the rivets that secure the replacement troughs to the rocker panels?

    4) I read an early description of someone replacing hog troughs and he talked about needing 40 hours to replace the troughs - how realistic is this time?

    Happy Holiday weekend, Bill!
