  1. I was at York PA and had a chance to view a sample wheel. WOW O WOW really nice. If my final restoration on my 63 GT Hawk bill is about $1500 under the estimate I will order. As we all know, final bills are never under, maybe time to save up a few extra $ for a set.

    Beautiful addition

  2. Three years ago I visited the owner of a 63 R1 that was under a tarp for years. Removing the tarp I was horrified as the interior was full of leaves and crap as the windows were left open; mold, mildew & animal remains. I offered the owner $1000 as is. He originally agreed after finding the bill of sale. The next day when I went to see him, pay him, and get a tow truck, he said his uncle wanted $7500 firm. I discussed the original deal to no avail. A few weeks later N.J. had a Noreaster storm and the car went under water. I called the guy and told him not only is he an idiot, he is a fool. He hung up on me.

  3. how about: defiantly built on a corvette chassis

the standard engine was a Ford 6 cylinder

the best is always at a car show when an "older" guy is telling his grandson about this car being a flop and a slow car. At that point, I talk to the kid, open the hood, fire up my R2 and say that slow never sounded so real !!!

  4. This is an interesting car, I too am interested in what price the seller is considering. I do not remember reading when this car was driven last or the state of the hog troughs. The interior looks good especially the dash.

    What storage history is there.

    thanks,

  5. First of all, congratulations on adding a supercharger; especially from Jon Myers. You should call him ASAP as you purchased it and the mounting brackets from him and hopefully you are still in warranty. The Type F is fine, I did find plenty at NAPPA. Mine; which was rebuilt by Jon, didnt start to wine until 50mph or thereabout.

Jon will suggest using the same ATF as what is used in the Supercharger. Instead of removing and turning upside down, you can get a 10cc syringe, tubing and a small piece of brake line; file the brake line smooth, and use that to draw out the old fluid, introduce new fluid, run on idle for a moment, drain and refill again.

Keep us posted on what Jon says,

  6. I had plans to join the Staten Island club Verrabakers for a drive and then dinner, but NJ / NY weather had a different plan as rain arrived. So earlier in the day, I drove my 63 GT Hawk to a high end mall for the monthly coffee and cars meet. I was the only Studebaker there among Porsche, Ferrari, Rolls Royce and a classic 63 split window Vette. Later I drove over to my mechanics shop as he watched me do some repairs.

Tomorrow I plan on a small show locally and will drive my 64 Avanti R2. Two (2) years ago my R2 took a 1st in Class at a Concorse de' Elegance.

  7. yes thanks, I do have a tenacity for this car. With the 63 GT Hawk I bought last year, the owner Jess Jordan passed away last Thursday. The wake was Sunday and I had the time and want to drive the car to the service. I met many of the family members & was introduced as the owner of Jess's car. About a dozen family members went outside to see the car and was speechless as the car shined in afternoon sun. The granddaughter just cried with emotion as she had so many memories. I noted many family members gently touching the car with such reverence I too was moved. As the funeral was Monday and I was not available, I offered the car to a club member who was best friends with Jess. He and his wife drove the GT Hawk from the Church; behind the lead limo to the graveside. Many available club members followed with an assortment of classic cars. The hearse was the final car. I received a few very emotional calls of thanks for availing the car. How could I not.

  8. There is an interesting history prior to my purchase through EBAY. I purchased the car from the son of the owner who was a Studebaker dealer. The original owner cut the hood and placed a boxy reverse hood scoop and between the headlights cut another rectangular hole and installed an older Porsche grill with the idea of cooling off the engine bay. To say the least.............awful. A very short version of a longer story

Once I bought the car I did suspension, brakes, carburetor, transmission, all seals, windshield, etc, etc. Then once the car was safe to drive fast and often I had body and paint and chrome work. Shortly after that 2 year restoration an uninsured woman driving with her knee as she talked on her phone and put on makeup slammed into me at 30mph while I was at a traffic light.NO INSURANCE from her. 14 months later another idiot teximgt ran into me at 25. another 12 month restoration. then last year hurricane Sandy, and, another frame off restoration. So imagine the inventory from Dave Thibeault, Studebaker International, Jon Myer and Nostalgic Motors. If not mistaken all 4 took a vacation together on the restoration of this car, a prior Avanti and recently a 1963 Gran Turismo Hawk. That is a very shortened version..................don't even ever ask how much is invested. Between the insurance company and my funds, no one will ever know the truth; its a lot.

  9. My 1964 R2 Avanti #5470 was seen and photographed in NY within the parking garage I have used for over 28 years. When its not too hot or rain in the forecast I'll drive in for the day when at work. This was noted and told to my by a friend; Neal, who has a 64 4 speed Avanti. How exciting as a few weeks ago I drove the 245miles; each way, from N.J. to the Hagerstown Regional Airport to share a photo opportunity that was successfully organized by the famous & prolific "Gunslinger"

  10. Gunslinger, if your cars have contempt for you I fear what mine has for me. Leaving after dinner; a fine dinner and great restaurant too, I headed back to New Jersey. All was going well as traffic was moving steadily at 70mph and the 64 Avanti R2 just in a state of joy. Crossing over one of the bridges I noted a sign indicating that the shoulder was closed. Not a problem as I drive on the designated lane and not along the shoulder. Ahead of me I noted a sea of brake lights and cars swerving lane to lane. Oh joy, another event. Slowing from 70 to the 30mph range I feared the truck behind me and not traffic in front as those Bendix brakes do their job well. Upon leaving the footprint of the bridge and entering the highway I too was suddenly aware of the lack of road condition that caused the sea of brake lights. I bounced and shook for about 30 to 40 feet then entered smooth road conditions again. I pulled over into the next rest stop to access any damage. Not fully into the service area I heard and saw my left hubcap airborne and next the car stopped suddenly. Oh boy, frozen calipers. I could not move the car forward. No visible damage and not a leak. Great. So, 130 miles from home and its late. I called a tow company and was very pleasantly surprised with the rapid response of the flatbed truck that arrived. The youngster driving was thrilled beyond words to tow an Avanti back to NJ. So, we talked and talked, lots of information to this young gearhead. All is well upon arriving home in NJ at 4am. Backing into my drive way we slid the car backward into the garage for a good rest. My mechanic is away for another week and I'm sure I will help to delete all the charges from his vacation.

    So, contempt, naaa, just love.

  11. Another congratulations. I have a 64R2 that after I restored and painted had two rear end hits a couple of years apart and then after her 3rd restoration super storm Sandy did a number. So I am the only guy who has had 4 restorations on a 64R2 in 6 years. Im in NJ and do drive into NY going to work when the weather is clear and dry. I cant do anything about road conditions or many of the idiots driving. If and when you decide to paint, I have a great shop in Shrewsbury NJ off of exit 109. Look up Heritage body and towing in Shrewsbury NJ. Billy Hartley loves the classics and especially older fiberglass. He is currently working on my friends Avanti II. I belong to the Staten Island Studebaker Club; Verrabakers Joe Lipton is President and I think we have 4 or 5 Avanti's in the club. You can reach Joe Lipton ; verrabakers@aol.com A bunch of us are going to York in March on Friday so maybe we can meet up. Another great contact for information and parts is Dave Thiebault @studdave@aol.com or phone 978-897-3158

good luck, happy driving and don't bother looking in the rear view mirror

  12. Hey gunslinger, keep me on your intent to go list. We had spoken years ago, I had a 73 Avanti II that was involved in a transport accident; later sold to a great guy in Fl who is still driving with smiles. I have a 64R2 that has undergone another (4th) restoration after Superstorm Sandy.

Recently I bought a 63 Gran Tursimo Hawk from a club member who is a young 93!!!

So, thanks and hope to finally meet up.

  13. I too enjoy hearing about staying in touch. The 1973 Avanti II that I had and restored beautifully was sold to J.S. in florida and we still write years later. The 1964 R2 that I bought from the owners son and have restored 4 times; ouch that is a reminder after original restoration-2 rear enders and then Superstorm Sandy, is another who I have kept in touch with. Twice in the last five years he has seen the car and smiled emotionally as he was told by me when I bought the car..:I will do a restoration to make your Dad proud. Tears in his eyes proved correct.

  14. When I did my first restoration on my 64 R2 #5470, I did not replace the underside hood insulation. Though it took a fair amount of time to remove the build up of glues and other adhesives & then grind off the bumps and other imperfections, the end result is a beautiful smooth appearance. I really did not notice an increase in noise as I drive my R2 pretty good on the NJ Parkway and NJ Turnpike so the overall roar is a pleasure.

To do it again, I would not use the insulation, I like the look without. When the underside gets greasy or a build up of fan belt dust, a spray o WD-40 and clean rags brings back the shine.

  15. I photographed the "shortcommings" of my carpet set. I sent photos to my supplier and he agreed that part of the set was missing. I appreciate your inputs and verification. To name my supplier might create a bad impression on him if the reader does not follow my story. So, all is good in Avanti carpet land.

  16. Regarding the small adapter from the mount to the mirror, the one I ordered from Jon Myer was smooth and probably brushed aluminum. He got it from another vendor whom I forgot. That price was around $27 and much much better than the polished one from Studebaker International that cracked when tightening the set screws

  17. Thanks Mike, I am discussing the short carpet issue with the vendor I ordered from . Im not ready to reference his name as he ordered from another. I'll give him some time to ponder the fact I have restored 2 Avanti's and have ordered many thousands of dollars of parts from him

    thanks for the reference
