  1. I will never forget the first Avanti I saw in person. It was just after the New York world's Fair, I was working at Catanese Brothers Studebaker in Russellton, Pa. The car carriers called a strike and the drivers were instructed to drop their loads at the nearest dealership. The carrier dropped off a Champagne with Elk interior, 1963 R2, 4 speed, P/S, P/B. The person (Henry) who bought that car, had a deposit on a 1963 Daytona R-2 4 speed Convertible, which he immediately transferred to the Avanti. Henry drove the Avanti like he stole it. Always pedal to the fiberglass. Within the first 18 months of ownership he destroyed the original engine, then the original supercharger, and then the 4:10 rear end. Paxton sent us a new R-2 engine, and a new R-3 supercharger. The rear axel I found in our wrecking yard (a 3:55 TT).

  2. Gentlemen, try going to this web site. The red 1964 is /was owned by Carl (tall fellow in blue shirt). Carl passed away about 3 years ago, I do not know what happened to his Avanti, i tried to buy it from him while he was still alive. The yellow Avanti II is my 1971 (RQB1600).

  3. There is a small metal tag (about 1" x 1/4") on the drivers side of the dash board. You could not see mine because it was positioned below the lip of the windshield. There is also a engraved metal plate on the driver door post. And occasionally the serial number may be engraved on the rear crossmember.

Good luck on getting a clear title.

  4. My 1971 had exactly the same problem you gentlemen are having. In my case it was the steel wire running down inside the steering column that was bending under stress at the tilt mechanism. I was unable to find anyone in North America who would repair the column. I finally replaced the column with one from idit (sp). $430.00 plus the $75.00 stainless coupling that replaces the rag joint.

  5. Both the state of Nevada and my insurance company insist that my 1971 (RQB 1600) is a Studebaker. I cannot get them to understand that it is simply an Avanti II. So you know what, I quite arguing with them and said, "Yep it's a Studebaker". I even took 2 Pennsylvania Titles, showing it to be a Avanti II.

  6. Gentlemen, I come on bended knee, groveling in your presence. I can not get the drivers door window to raise, and I can not get the passenger door window to lower. Operating any of the window switches does not put a drain on the battery. I cannot find a fuse or relay for the window's. Please help, what is my next step.

  7. I also am using the 1406/2101 combo on my 1971.

And I have less than 1/4" of clearance, even with a drop 10" air filter. Majority of my problem stems from a PO pulling the body shims, until my car actually sits lower and with more forward rake than a 1663/64. Am giving thought to going back to the stock intake and carb. At least then I had over 3/4" of clearance.

  8. Kelly,

I bought a new rag joint several months ago from one of our vendors in Arizona. Price without shipping, if my memory is correct, was about $50.00. That included new fasteners and washers.

If All else fails, send me a e-mail, and I will try to find that new rag joint, as I never installed it. Just bought it for a spare. But I changed from a rag joint to stainless steel universal steering joint $78.00, at So-Cal Speed Shop.
