  1. I am 6'5" and have a 1963/64 Avanti. I am also 80 years old so getting that low into a seat is a problem, but I'm ok after I get in.  My Avanti is an automatic and all works fine driving.  Years ago I looked at an Avanti with a standard transmission.  When I tried to put my foot on the clutch, my knee hit between the door and steering wheel.  I could not operate that car.

  2. My son and I bought this Avanti about 4 years ago.  The original purchaser had it until he died in about 2017.  He thought so much about his Avanti and Golden Hawk that they were mentioned in his obituary.  Original, paint, carpets, seats, and engine, save for some hoses and filters etc.  We finally get to enjoy it together this August as he's been in India and London for the past 7 years.  Bozeman , Montana will celebrate Cruiz'n on Main Street with about 6 blocks in downtown blocked off for showing old cars.

Maybe a better way to post pictures.

  3. This fall, when my son with mechanical aptitude came to visit from London, we worked on odds and ends on our 1963/64 Avanti R1 .  One of the items we addressed was a non working gas gauge.  After testing grounds, etc. it was determined that the culprit must be the sending unit.  After removing the rear seat and back, we removed the rear panel exposing the gas tank.  From there, we removed the sending unit and found the cork float functioned properly, so we put the unit in an ultrasonic cleaner for the evening .  After drying the unit the next day, electrical checks indicated it now functioned properly and putting it back into place confirmed our repair to be good. It's really nice to have a working gas gauge.

I guess the above just leads up to my thought in the Title.  With the seat back removed we could see the "holes in the deck" that have been previously talked about.  One in the center near the tank is a 2" diameter hole with no apparent function.  Lowe's had a huge supply of I guess rubber bottle stops that were slightly tapered.  We used a 2 1/16" diameter stop to plug the 2" hole, sealing it in place with a clear silicone.

The other two holes were 1/2" diameter and located in line with the brackets that extend out of the underside  of the seat back.  They obviously were aligned to fasten the seat back brackets to the floor.  but in this car, there had never been any fasteners , so  the back just rested on the rear of the seat cushion.  This seems to work fine and we plugged each hole with a bottle stopper of the correct size.  Do any of you have a description or pictures of the hardware used in the original Avanti to fasten the seat back brackets  to the floor?

This is getting long winded, I know, so apologies. When we reinstalled the rear panel we used some sticky backed weather stripping foam to seal off the interior from the gas tank area.  When all was reassembled and hole plugs and weather stripping were in place, we took a ride.  What a difference !  Previous rides would let us smell some exhaust , but now NO EXHAUST smell.  It was worth the effort.

  4. Avanti 83, thanks.  I had not considered just sliding a couple of clips to the end of the chrome strip.  I see in the pictures above that there are 10-12 clips for each strip.  Someday, in the spring when my unheated barn is warm, I'll try to remove the door panel and check it out.  I have electric windows which work fine, but are really sluggish in cold weather.  I have thought of lubricating the mechanism to make the window work easier, so that would be a perfect time. I really  enjoy the help and information on this Forum.

  5. Fuel gauge did not register.  Electrical checking pointed to a bad tank sender.  Float was ok, so I put the sender in an ultrasonic cleaner.  After a very hot water washing out, and a blow dry with compressed air, the sender worked fine.  Obvious crud came off in the ultrasonic.

  6. John, thank you.  I'll look where you say.  I know I have a single reservoir Master Cylinder.  I suspect it is not the original one.  I do have all of the publications you mention and all others I have seen available.  Sometimes applying them to the terms familiar to many mechanics is a bit difficult, but I am learning from all of you.  Thanks, to all.  Daryl

First, are you sure that it is the tail lights and not the stop lights?  It sounds like your stop light switch has "died".

Well, I guess I cannot tell.  Aren't the tail and stop [brake] lights using the same bulb and red lense ?

  8. I went to the garage to work on my 1963/64 Avanti R1 and noticed the tail lights [red] were on.  The battery was on a trickle charger so the day or two spent with the tail lights on did not run the battery down.  I checked the above windshield light switches and all were off.  Headlights were off.  Key was out of the ignition.  I pressed on the brake pedal a few times, but the tail lights remained on.

Any thoughts on what to check to get the tail lights off and operating properly ?

  9. Gunslinger and all, I answered my own question on the LEDs.  I don't have experience with this website's products, but their website is quite useful.  Just plug in your car year, maker, and model and they give you the original bulbs , quantities, and replacement LEDs for your car.  You can also pick hues and colors the way it looks to me.  I have no idea about their price competitiveness.

  10. Gunslinger, thanks .  The bezel does come off fairly easily on the ceiling lights.   On one light I found a missing bulb, and the other on the passenger side had a bulb.  On the passenger side, with a bulb, a few flicks of the switch produced a light.  The bulb in the now working light is a GE 1004.  Do you have a number for a replacement LED bulb ?  That seems prudent since the GE 1004 got quickly hot.   Thanks for your help.  Daryl

  11. My rear ceiling lights in my 1963 made R1 do not operate with their individual switches.

1] When should the light switches operate the ceiling lights.  Does the ignition have to be on ?  Doors open ?  Or ??

2] Of course, my problem could be bulbs, or the switches themselves.   How does one remove the lenses to get at the interior of the light ?

Also, how is the bezel removed ?  Is it just pulled or pried off ?

Thanks to all who contribute here.  Weather if finally good enough to work on these things.  Daryl

  12. This is not my discovery, as I saw it somewhere else for tightening the inside mirror.  I cut two small pieces of fairly fine sandpaper that could fit into the ball joint of the mirror stem.  I glued the sandpaper smooth side to smooth side with a drop of super glue.  Then inserted the sandpaper into the ball joint and tightened as usual .  The set up gave enough friction to hold the mirror in place.

  13. Thanks, all.  This has been fun in sort of a cryptic way.  I'll think on getting down on my back and wriggling and wriggling.   Maybe my son will come by to help some day.

I was 20 when a friend and I went to the closest Studebaker dealership in a neighboring town in Iowa.  The 1963s were out and one was on the lot.  It must have been an R2 as the speedometer went to 160.   The young salesman was eager to take us for a ride, so we got in.  Those Iowa roads were narrow and very hilly but the salesman seemed to want to show off.   When the needle got to 130 I was ready to get out, although invincible in most every other way.  I never forgot the ride and neither did my friend who came by my house 55 years later and told the same story when he heard I had an Avanti .

On a related subject, does anyone have a diagram of the fuse panel with labels for each fuse?   Daryl
