  1. Ok, what is the secret to getting the rear brake drums back on?

Everything is new. I had the drums turned, so there is no lip to catch on. The brake pad adjusters are turned to the inside, away from the shoes.

i laid sandpaper inside the drums and sanded the shoes to match the curve of the drum.

Still, I can't get the $;?&€} things past the brake pads.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Mike

  2. My Avanti R2 project (2302) came without the carburetor.

I have been saving my pennies for a while now, waiting to buy a used Carter afb.

So, if you have a tired R1 or R2 carb on the shelf, or have been waiting to replace yours with a nice, new Edlebrock, today's your day!

Drop me an email at mtgibby@hotmail.com.

    Thanks!

Next week: I need your R2 aircleaner!

  3. Stormy,

Did you ever find a hub puller?

I purchased a SnapOn hub puller last month to pull the hub/drum units off of a spare rear end I had. It pulls on four of the lug bolts.

You are welcome to borrow it if you need to. I also have 13 NOS rear lugs if you need a couple.

  4. Besides the Revell model kit I built as a kid in the 70s, the first real Avanti I even saw was a 63 Avanti abandoned on Pearl Harbor Naval Station in the early eighties.

I was stationed at Submarine Base PH on the USS Tautog, when I drove over to the 'surface' side of the base where they parked the big grey targets.

Over near the shipyard was a very sad looking red Avanti sitting on the ground with no wheels. It had been there so long that it had become fenced in at the intersection of three chain link fences, so you couldn't get very close to it.

No idea on the back story for the car or whatever became of it.

    Sad.

  5. The new black carpet set arrived yesterday.

    Any hints for installation?

All seats are out of the car and Dynomat insulation is covering the floor.

i have pulled about a dozen carpet tacks out of the fiberglass, where I think the previous owner secured the old carpet.

Surely there is a better way!?

    Thanks!

  6. The manual says I need to install a new copper gasket under the lock-tab where the large bolt goes through the vibration damper.

i don't see a part number for this copper gasket in the parts book or the SI catalog.

is this gasket needed and where are folks getting a replacement?

    Thanks!

    Mike

  7. So I ordered a new replacement lens from SI. The mold was not perfect and it had some gaps on the screw mounting posts. Still, I tapped the posts and hoped for the best. It worked and is holding.

I took the old lens with the broken off screw and used a dremel to cut off the broken end of the screw that was sticking out. Before I could cut through all the way, the heat from the cutting loosened the screw and I pulled it out. (burning my fingers!) I will try and repair and tap that slightly melted post and put it back on the car.

Now I have a spare left lens, and numb fingers.....

  8. Thanks Tom.

I was just curious where each white (ground) wire went. I figure the heavier gauge wire is meant to carry a heavier load, i just don't know if that is for the voltage regulator or the starter solenoid.

They both emerge from the harness at the same location and are just about the same length. Confusing!
